2450 Head of Cattle Sold

Fall season is upon us. The fall of 2008 saw a lot of cows being shipped, (crazy amount) and we are just one market. It seemed to be the same trend throughout all Saskatchewan markets. Producers were fed up with the cattle industry; continuing low prices, high feed costs, fuel costs, etc. Some livestock owners bringing in their whole herds right out of the pasture, cows, calves, bulls ..... washing their hands of them with a good riddance sort of attitude.

Then with the new year of 2009 prices started to pick up. Calves as well as cows slowly started their upward movement. Bred cows went from picking up a good cow for $400.00 to $600.00 before Christmas to $800.00 to $1200.00 after the new year. Cull cows went from $0.30 cents per lb. to $0.50 cents per lb. Steers went from say on a 600 lb. weight, $1.00 per lb. to a $130.00 per lb. We were even beginning to see the odd smile again.

Quite frankly I am looking forward to the 2009-2010 season as an auction market manager as well as a cattle producer. I’m hoping the men and women who hung in there through the rough times are going to be rewarded for their resilience.

As far as all those cows being shipped last fall .....? Did we really have that much of a surplus of cows or are cows and calves going to be worth a premium? Lets hope so. Best of luck to you on the 2009-2010 season.
